FAQs
Clear answers when you need them.
We know arranging a cremation can bring a lot of questions. Here are straightforward answers to some of the things families ask us most often.
What is a direct cremation?
A direct cremation is a simple, unattended cremation without a formal funeral service or mourners present at the crematorium.
Your loved one is cared for professionally, the necessary arrangements and paperwork are completed, and their ashes are safely returned afterwards.
Why might someone choose a direct cremation?
Some families prefer a simpler and more affordable alternative to a traditional funeral. A direct cremation removes the pressure of arranging a formal service at the crematorium while still ensuring your loved one is cared for with dignity and respect.
Families can then choose to hold a memorial, celebration of life or private gathering at a later date if they wish.
How much does a direct cremation cost?
Our direct cremation service is priced at £1,250.
We believe in clear, transparent pricing and will explain exactly what is included before any arrangements are made.
What is included in the £1,250 direct cremation?
The service includes the essential arrangements needed for a respectful direct cremation, including:
- Professional guidance and support
- Completion of the necessary paperwork
- Collection and transportation of your loved one
- Care and preparation at our funeral home
- A simple coffin
- Transport to the crematorium
- The unattended cremation fee
- Safe return of the ashes to your family
Full details are available on our Direct Cremation page.
Are there any additional costs?
We aim to keep our pricing simple and transparent. The £1,250 package covers the services listed on our Direct Cremation page.
Doctor’s fees are not included where they are applicable. We will always explain any costs clearly before you make any decisions.
Can I visit my loved one before the cremation?
Yes. We understand how important this can be for some families.
A visit to spend time with your loved one in our chapel can be arranged during office hours. Please speak to us and we will explain what is possible.
Can family attend the direct cremation?
No. A direct cremation is unattended, which means there is no formal funeral service and family members or mourners do not attend the cremation itself.
You can still choose to hold a memorial or celebration of life separately.
Can I choose the date and time of the cremation?
No. As part of a direct cremation, the date and time are arranged according to crematorium availability and cannot be selected by the family.
We will keep you informed throughout the process and answer any questions you may have.
Where will my loved one be cremated?
We arrange direct cremations locally in the Doncaster area.
One of the important differences with Fond Farewell is that your loved one remains in local care rather than being transported long distances around the country as part of a national operation.
What happens to the ashes afterwards?
Once the cremation has taken place, your loved one’s ashes are safely returned to you.
We believe this should be handled personally and with care, and we will explain the arrangements with you directly.
What type of coffin is provided?
A simple coffin suitable for direct cremation is included as part of the service.
We can also discuss the available options with you when making the arrangements.
How quickly will the cremation take place?
The timing can vary depending on the necessary paperwork, circumstances and crematorium availability.
We will keep you informed throughout and let you know what to expect as soon as the arrangements are confirmed.
Can we hold a memorial or celebration of life afterwards?
Absolutely. Many families choose a direct cremation because it gives them the freedom to remember their loved one in their own way.
A memorial, celebration of life or gathering can be held later, at a time and place that feels right for your family.
Who will I speak to during the arrangements?
Fond Farewell is an independent, family-run funeral home, not a national call centre.
We keep the service personal, so the people you speak to are closely involved throughout the arrangements and in the care of your loved one.
What should I do if someone has just died?
What happens next depends on where and how the death has occurred, but you do not need to work everything out on your own.
Visit our When Someone Dies page for straightforward guidance, or call us and we will help you understand the next steps.
Can I plan a direct cremation in advance?
Yes. If you are thinking ahead, you can talk to us about your wishes and the type of arrangements you would like your family to know about.
There is no pressure to make decisions immediately. We are happy to answer your questions and help you record your wishes clearly.
You don’t need to have all the answers.
Every family’s circumstances are different. If there’s something you’re unsure about, just get in touch. We’ll listen, explain your options and help you understand what happens next.
